What auditors usually ask first at period close

Knowing the first questions helps teams prepare schedules that answer them before the fieldwork starts.

External auditors often start with cash cut-off, revenue recognition around period end, and aged reconciling items on key control accounts. If those three areas are tidy, fieldwork opens calmer.

Have tie-outs ready that link the trial balance to the schedules in the pack. Narrative for judgement areas should state the method and the alternative considered — not only the conclusion.

When something is still open, say so early with a completion plan. Surprises after the entrance meeting cost more goodwill than an honest incomplete list.

Talk through your next close if you want an independent pass before the pack leaves finance.
